1986 United Kingdom Proof Coin Collection
Please note: Photos displayed are stock photos as we may have multiple of the one item. The set is second hand and may have scuffing, writing or slight tears to the outer box.
The Decimal Proof Set of 1986 was the first to contain a £2. It was a commemorative coin and, celebrating the XIII Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh that year. Struck in nickel-brass, the £2 coin was to be struck to commemorate a sporting event; none were issued for general circulation.
The £1 coin represented Northern Ireland with a reverse depicting the flax plant, the fibres of which have, for hundreds of years, been woven into the linen for which Northern Ireland is justly famed. In 1986 no 50p, 20p, 10p, or 5p coins were issued for general circulation, making 1986 sets of great significance.
