Born Ronald Belford Scott in Scotland on 9 July 1946, his family moved to Australia in 1952, settling in Fremantle, Western Australia.
A classic ‘wild child’, Bon began playing drums with a Scottish pipe band. He developed his lead singing as a member of local rock and pop bands before moving to the other side of Australia to join a progressive rock act. The pivotal moment of his career came in 1974 when he appeared on stage at an Adelaide hotel to sing with up-and coming AC/DC.
Bon discovered an immediate affinity with the band’s Scottish-born co-founders, Angus and Malcolm Young. Becoming a fully-fledged member in September that year, his inimitable stage presence and distinctive, raspy vocals were key elements in the band’s rise to international super stardom. Bon was also a gifted lyricist whose powerful lines worked perfectly with the Young brothers’ aggressive guitar riffs. Their work resulted in some of the most enduring hard rock ever recorded: TNT, It’s a Long Way to the Top, High Voltage, Jailbreak, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Highway to Hell, to name a few.
Aged 33, Bon Scott passed away in 1980 having made seven albums with AC/DC. He has never been forgotten. Adored by fans old and new, many believe him to be the greatest rock ‘n roll singer of all time. His legendary status lives on and continues to grow.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Bon Scott 2024 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin.
