2013 $1 Silver Proof Coin Kangaroo Series 20th Anniversary Edition

The kangaroo first appeared on Australia's coins in 1938 when it hopped onto the halfpenny and penny.

The original design was used until 1964, when the existing coins ceased production with the introduction of Australia's decimal coinage system. 55 years later from when the kangaroo first graced our currency, the Royal Australian Mint's Kangaroo series was launched in 1993 to celebrate one of the most recognisable icons of Australia.

Over the past 20 years, the series has seen multiple interpretations of the kangaroo, from traditional Indigenous Australian designs to more contemporary representations, as seen in the Great Australian Artists Series.
