The Australian florin was first released in 1910 as part of the implementation of the Coinage Act 1909, affectionately referred to as a 'Two Bob' and minted from 1910 until 1963 with commemorative florins issued in: 1927, 1934–35, 1951, and 1954. No florins were minted in 1920, 1929–30, 1937, 1948–50 and 1955.
Australia's first commemorative coin the 'Canberra Florin' was issued on May 9 1927 to commemorate the opening of Parliament House in Canberra as the seat of Government in Australia by the then Duke of York later King George VI. Struck at the Melbourne Mint 2 000 000 of these coins were produced for circulation.
